πŸ’¬πŸ’£DEFINITION of Descriptive text

In the 8th Grade English Book of 2016 by the Ministry of Education and Culture, descriptive text is defined as a text in English that describes a person, place, or thing in detail. Both in terms of depiction of the body, object, nature, or others.

In short, descriptive text is a text that explains something. Whether people, objects, events, or places. Descriptive text provides a detailed explanation so that readers understand the object of information they are looking for.

πŸ’¬πŸ’£THE PURPOSE

The purpose of descriptive text is only one, namely to describe, represent or express a person or an object, both abstract and concrete. This is why descriptive text is written in simple and short language, so that the contents of the text are easy to understand.

Descriptive text has 4 special characteristics. Here's the explanation:

  • Using the simple present tense

Descriptive uses the simple present tense to explain a fact or truth contained in a thing or person.

  • Using many adjectives

Adjectives are known by adjectives, such as good-bad, big-small. Adjectives are used because descriptive text will explain the properties of an object, human, or animal.

  • There is a Relating Verb

Relating verb is a type of verb that tries to connect to the explanation of the noun that is the subject, such as be, have, seem. Descriptive text uses a lot of relating verbs as a liaison between the subject and the explanation.

  • Descriptive text has only one focus, namely to describe one object.

Then what is the difference with recount text? Recount text retells a story that happened in the past, using the simple past tense. While descriptive text describes a thing in detail.
